Superior wet traction The main advantage of directional tires is that they offer great resistance to hydroplaning. Directional tires also look more aggressive, fast, and stylish than standard tread patterns.

Passenger vehicle tires fall into two major categories, directional and non- directional tires. Before choosing a tire, it is important to know the advantages of disadvantages inherent to each design.

Non- directional tires have a tread pattern that is designed to perform equally well regardless of the tires rotational direction. This is because their directional tread pattern is designed to channel water away from the center of the tire.

Non directional tires can be rotated (swapped) to different sides of the vehicle, extending their life, and making uneven tread wear easier to correct. Directional tires can be identified by an arrow on the sidewall of the tire indicating the intended rotational direction.

The tires channel water away efficiently for excellent hydroplaning resistance and deliver sporty performance on dry surfaces. For this reason, most drivers end up just switching directional tires from front to back on the same side when they get a rotation.

If directional tires get mounted backward, you won’t get the hydroplaning resistance and other performance driving benefits the tread is designed for. It is recommended to rotate standard tires between front and back and crossways to maximize lifetime mileage.

It’s not because the tread is less durable, but rather it’s because tire rotations involve extra labor and cost. Many drivers opt to swap front and rear tires on the same side to avoid the hassle.

They also are great on dry conditions because the tread dissipates heat while a solid center rib keeps the tire rigid for high-speed stability. These tires have great traction due to having larger tread blocks on the outside for better corning on dry roads, yet smaller tread blocks on the inside for better grip & contact while driving in wet or snowy conditions.

Meaning, these would be great if you want a tire for those icy winters but can then turn around and keep driving them throughout the summer. They offer year-round grip, great traction in wet, icy, snowy conditions, you can drive them at fast speeds, and you have multiple rotation possibilities.

They have a long tread life and keep your car smooth and quiet while driving. They can be fitted and rotated in any way due to the continuous ribs across the entire tread face.

Directional tires come in all levels of quality from the $100 Han kooks to the $2000 ea special Michelin on the Bugatti Aaron. The OEM tires were non- directional Z rated (150+mph sustained) They tracked and handled great and had marginal winter performance.

Bottom line: if you’re going after great dry handling at high speeds, directional treads tend to be better. If you need year around performance in all seasons, it’s really going to depend on the tire itself.

If you live in Alaska or Minnesota, get non- directional winter tires. They offer little or no advantage on a normal passenger car.

Its completely and utterly tire model specific. The only real difference which is mentioned is that they are rotated front to back and never crossed.

I have owned both types typically in high performance all-seasons and only can say I found the directional ones better in the rain mostly. Cooper makes some decent tires however like any tire brand from premium Michelin to budget Sumo they make a few stand outs and rest average to below average.

There are two main differences between a front and rear motorcycle tire. The triangle shape of the front tire helps the bike enter and exit turns while the flatter shape of the rear tire gives the bike more stability.

The second difference is that the forces generated on the rear vs. the front tire are reversed. That said, you can run a rear tire on the front if you reverse it, so the rotational arrow is backwards.

I thought I was reading that incorrectly so had to check to make sure it wasn't glued on clinchers. The reverse osmotic hysteresis of the equivalent tire molecular compound is atomically linked to the Avogadro's Constant.

Cross-hatched or herringbone patterns (like the Cora CX) do something similar but without guiding the water away. For cars, it's mandatory as hydroplaning on asphalt surfaces is a proven fact.

For bikes with their dramatically narrower profile, it's a bit of a different story. Normally the pavement itself acts as the siding...not allowing a sheet of water to build up under the tire.

Anyone who's raced an urban CRT in the rain on slicks, and where the corners have painted crosswalks, has likely experienced at least some uneasy moments. A properly engineered sipped wet weather tire will outperform a slick in the conditions for which it was intended.

There is absolutely nothing even remotely approaching hydroplaning on bike tires. Metal and paint surfaces are more slippery due to there being nothing for the tire to deform around and grip compared to asphalt or concrete.

Sometimes tread features can help provide a harder rubber compound a better mechanical link with the road surface, for better grip.
