The result was a colorful, smooth-gaited horse, used in the show ring and for pleasure and trail riding. In 1979, the National Spotted Saddle Horse Association (NS SHA) was organized in Murfreesboro, Tennessee.

The association focuses on promoting naturally- gained saddle horses with pinto coloration. The NS SHA is adamant about disallowing cruel and inhumane training and showing practices, including scoring, sometimes seen in other elements of the Spotted Saddle Horse industry, and prohibited by the Horse Protection Act of 1970 (HPA).

The NS SHA also bans the use of action devices (such as chains or other weights around the pasterns) and performance packages (stacks of pads attached to the shoe, sometimes weighted or used to conceal abusive shoeing practices) in their shows, which goes beyond the protection afforded by the HPA. In 1985, the Spotted Saddle Horse Breeders' and Exhibitors' Association (SSH BEA) was formed, headquartered in Shelbyville, Tennessee.

Violations of the HPA are addressed in the SSH BEA rule book, and violations can result in disqualifications from individual shows or extended suspensions from Spotted Saddle Horse showing. They average 14.3 to 16 hands (59 to 64 inches, 150 to 163 cm) high and weigh 900 to 1,100 pounds (410 to 500 kg).

The head is refined, with a straight or slightly convex facial profile. Over and Tobago are the two most common patterns, and the coverage of the white spots can range from minimal to almost complete.

To be registered with the NS SHA, Spotted SaddleHorses must display an ambling gait (they cannot trot) and have pinto coloration. If a foal who has one or both parents registered with the NS SHA displays solid coat color (without pinto markings), it can be listed as having “identification” registration, and any spotted foals it has are considered to have NSSHA-documented parentage.

Solid-colored, gained mares and stallions can be registered as breeding stock, but are not considered to have full registration with the organization. Horses traveling at a show gait can cover 10 to 20 miles per hour (16 to 32 km/h), with an extremely smooth motion.

It has a rich history and while many equestrians are embracing this American horse, it's still largely misunderstood. The American Saddle bred horse originated in the United States during the country's earliest days.

It was the mount of choice for many American Revolution and Civil War officers, and it is no exaggeration to say that the country was founded upon its back. General Lee rode a Saddle bred named Traveler, and Generals John Hunt Morgan and Nathan Bedford Forrest only rode Kentucky Saddlers, never switching over to another breed.

Many people don't even know about them, and if they do, they are mistaken for the Tennessee Walking Horse, and criticized for their “exaggerated” gaits. With long, high-set necks and tails, beautiful movement and regal air about them, Saddlebags may be the most elegant horse breed, and are undeniably the unique.

It also makes an excellent trail horse due to its intelligence and smooth gaits. Since the Saddle bred is not as common a breed as the Quarter Horse or Arabian, it may be harder to stumble upon, but when you meet one you will understand how easy it is to fall in love with these special equines.

In addition, one wild burro, gathered from the Seven Troughs herd management area, located in Nevada was also offered for adoption. The BLM uses its adoption program as a primary tool to place these iconic animals into private care.

The horses and burros available for adoption typically come from overpopulated herds on public lands where available vegetation and water can become scarce as populations grow. There are no natural predators that can effectively control wild horse and burro population growth on public lands.

These distinctions are made primarily on size and weight, though they sometimes take bone structure and overall stockiness into account, too. Typing is usually more of a generalized mode of classification and lacks a lot of the precision of something like breed distinctions.

Bred distinctions are usually certified by official registering agencies, and typically have international consistency. Typing, on the other hand, is more commonly used to make generalizations about a horse’s capabilities.

The body is strong with a broad back and rounded withers, which is the spot between the horse's shoulder blades. On a heavy horse, the legs are short and thick to aid them in pulling carts or plowing fields.

These types of horses also move with short steps and choppy movements to give them ultimate traction. They are distinguished by more linear, angular bodies and typically longer legs; saddles can easily be fitted over the horse’s back, allowing for a comfortable ride.

In most cases these horses have both true and false ribs, which aid in saddle placement, among other things. They often appear somewhat shrunken even when grown to full size, and are popular options for child riders.

In a sport where men and women compete equally against each other, at the young and amateur rider levels the girls greatly outnumber the boys. Inevitably, our girls would come home after riding lessons and complain that their “tushes” hurt.

In general, children will not demonstrate the ramifications of having ridden in gender-inappropriate and badly-fitted saddles until they’re older. Conscientious parents would never let their children wear shoes that don’t fit.

Some potential issues arising from pediatric problems include leg length and balance, scoliosis, back pain, and pelvic misalignment, and are difficult to correct in adulthood, which is why it is important that shoes fit properly during the formative years. Hip pain, for example, can result when the twist of the saddle is too wide for the young rider.

I have conferred with my friend Dr. James Carson (author of The Rider’s Pain-Free Back and one of the few certified equestrian medical professionals in the industry). There are three muscular components in the testicles, one in the wall of the scrotum, one in the vas deferens (connecting the testes with the urethra), and the remaster (responsible for ‘tightening of the balls’ or pulling the testicles back up into the body cavity in a protective measure).

This last muscle doesn’t function fully before puberty, which means that a young boy actually feels his testicles being ‘squished’ when riding because they cannot be retracted.” This is, of course, embarrassing to discuss with both your riding instructor and your mother, which is probably why boys would rather pursue other sports.

If the pressure from the saddle is too great on the sensitive area between the testicles and the anus (the perineum), it can actually hinder blood flow through the artery that leads into the penis. This could eventually cause erectile issues all the way to complete impotence if the blood flow stops totally.

This is one of those lost nuggets of wisdom, which absolutely should be reintegrated into saddle design and could possibly influence the unbalanced female/male riding statistic. A Western saddle has been developed that can be adjusted to properly fit any horse’s back, for any discipline.

Danny Ketch of DK Saddlery in Calgary, Alberta has designed a Western saddle that can be fitted to each horse’s unique shape, and adjusted to the horse’s shape as it changes with feed, work, and age. In just one minute, a rider can adjust the bars up to six inches to fit the horse’s withers and shoulders correctly.

This gives the saddle more stability on the horse’s back, encouraging more freedom of motion in the shoulders. “I have barrel racers who have increased their running time by up to half a second and ropers who have been able to rope without a breast collar or back cinch and the saddle has never moved,” said Ketch.
