As far as I know they are about as “code” approved as a flexible drain line on a kitchen or bathroom sink! I don't remember seeing anywhere that self piercing, self-tapping valves are not allowed.

“The Code is not a peak to reach but a foundation to build from.” In the 2012 North Carolina Plumbing Code which is based on the 2009 Int'l Code, Section P605.9(4) lists saddle -type fittings” as one of the prohibited joints and connections.

GA 2006 Plumbing code amendments (effective 1/1/2007) Exception: Saddle -type fittings can be used to connect refrigerator ice makers to an existing residential unit water distribution system provided the manufacturer’s installation instructions for the distribution piping do not prohibit the use of saddle fittings.

Saddle fittings can be used to install thermal expansion tanks to an existing residential unit water distribution system if approved by the manufacturer of the tank. Shutoff valves to water supplies for refrigerators with automatic icemakers shall be accessible on the same floor as said refrigerators.

In my area they are used a lot to supply water to evaporative coolers. They have to be turned off and water drained from the supply line every fall.

Bookmarks Google Dig Del.CIO.us StumbleUpon I blogged about how saddle valves are illegal products in Minnesota nearly five years ago on my website, but it's time for an update on that topic with some more information.

These are devices that allow for a very fast, cheap, do-it-yourself installation of a ¼” water supply line, typically used to supply water to ice makers and whole-house humidifiers. The needle just pokes a hole in the pipe, and I've heard it can be done without even turning off the water... not that I've ever tried.

These saddle valves are prone to leakage, and they're not allowed by the Minnesota State Plumbing Code. There is actually nothing in the Minnesota State Plumbing Code that specifically prohibits these types of valves ; they're just not approved.

Section 4715.0420 of the MN State Plumbing Code gives a list of approval standards. When installing an ice maker or whole-house humidifier, tap off of an existing water line with a proper tee fitting and have a proper shutoff valve installed.

There has been a saddle valve installed for the ice maker at my own house since I moved in over four year ago. I haven't touched it and it hasn't leaked, but I thought this would make for a nice little project where I could lay out the basic steps of replacing a saddle valve.

To replace a saddle valve or tee off an existing water line, start by obtaining the needed parts. I'm assuming the saddle valve is connected to a ½” copper water line.

If you're comfortable soldering copper tubing and you already have the equipment to do it, this project will cost about $10. Push fittings are extremely easy to use, requiring no special tools to make connections to copper, Ex, or CPC tubing.

This should leave a small gap in the water line, which you'll bridge with the tee fitting. Stick the short length of copper tubing into the open end of the tee fitting; this is what you'll need to connect the stop valve to.

FLIR has a relatively new pocket-sized infrared camera with all the bells and whistles of the much larger and expensive E6. I recently had an informative email exchange with a past client that highlighted the discovery of some especially nasty water damage behind the stone siding at her town home.

I thought she had such a great story to share that I invited her onto our podcast, which you can listen to below. This stuff is failing left and right all over the country, and most time the homeowner has no idea when their wall is a rotted mess behind the siding.

Take a look around any room full of home inspectors, and you'll notice we look a lot alike. It's as if there's an unwritten rule that you have to be an old white guy to be a home inspector.

It's all gross or creepy stuff we've seen over the past year as home inspectors. There are some truly wacky things that actually are illegal here in the Badger State, and it just might make you laugh.

We don’t think you have much to worry about, but it’s always a good idea to be on the right side of the law. We’re aware that these uncertain times are limiting many aspects of life.

You can't serve margarine at a restaurant unless the customer specifically requests it. It is illegal to not give a farm animal the right of way on a public road.

It is illegal to not base business hours on central time. I can attest that I have never consumed Wisconsin cheese that wasn't highly pleasing.

In Racine, it is illegal to shoot missiles at parade participants. Clearly, whoever wrote this law got humiliated in a snowball fight as a child.

There are all sorts of bizarre facts to know about Wisconsin, but some of the strangest revolve around ice cream. Wisconsin is also known as the home of the “Toilet Paper Capital of the World” in Green Bay and is the leading producer of United States ginseng.

Taking a beautiful photograph in Wisconsin is as easy as walking outside! Sheboygan Lighthouse is a true dream to experience, as is Devil’s Lake State Park, Big Manitou Falls, and Palfrey’s Glen in Merrimack.

We’d recommend heading to Peninsula State Park as well if you’re looking for a great place to pull out your camera and fall in love with the natural landscape. Wisconsin is known for its kind people, German heritage, and the Green Bay Packers, but it’s also known for quite a bit more.

Tailgating at Badger’s games is a fantastic way to spend your time here in the state, and cheese curds at the State Fair are a true Wisconsinite rite of passage. Make your way to Lake Michigan for sailing, or maybe enjoy an ice-cold Miller beer.

Head to Solely’s Grille in Milwaukee to enjoy a butter burger, and Summer fest is the perfect place to indulge in a bit of fun and high caloric eats. They work by using a clamp to put a hole in a water intake pipe and are generally used where a low volume stream is needed.

Companies that offer do-it-yourself icemaker kits recommend checking in your area to determine whether saddle valves are permitted. Saddle valves commonly have leakage problems that can cause damage to consumers' homes if not discovered in time.

Noted a saddle valve installed in a hot water heater copper flex connector at the shank portion of the flex connector where it transitions to the Ex hot water distribution system. Valve was corroded and leaking causing damage to hot water heater.

Valve feeds a hole house humidifier system. Granted valve is bad, HVAC company who installed it says it needs to be replaced, Question is it permissible install a saddle valve in a copper flex line in the first place.

Even the handyman says not to install on the hot water line, even less one that is corrugated. Mcyr: Even the handyman says not to install on the hot water line, even less one that is corrugated.

Cbottger: Also in the common sense code book first sentence of first paragraph;) “Common sense” was same term I used with homeowner.

Saddlevalves may not be allowed in Illinois but are incorporated all the time. The bad thing about most saddle valves is that I can guarantee they will eventually leak.

Another problem they have is a tendency for the cutting tube to break off before it digs a good hole which also can cause leaks. In general however, the other problem with this item is the rubber gasket which does eventual deteriorate.

These are my personal opinions, but I find them to be accurate from a practical standpoint which is what really matters. Wdecker (William J. Decker, CMI, IL.

I’ll bet you a dollar that the listing doesn’t allow the fitting to be used on flex pipe. No pipe or fitting of the water supply system shall be drilled or tapped nor shall any band or saddle be used except at the water main in the street.

** Brazed joints shall be made by first cleaning the surface to be joined down to the base metal, applying flux approved for such joints and for the filler metal to be used, and making the joints by heating to a temperature sufficient to melt the approved brazing filler metal on contact. An extracted mechanical joint may be made in copper tube types K or L only for water distribution.

The joint shall be made with a mechanical extraction tool and joined by brazing. I was simply stating facts, and see no conflict in my statements as I was trying to relay my experience as I do have some, and can offer insight on some aspects even to you sir.

**SUBPART I: ****Section 890.1130(****g)(7) **Closed water systems shall have a properly sized thermal expansion tank located in the cold water supply as near to the water heater as possible and with no shut-off valve or other device between the heater and the expansion tank… Exception: In existing buildings with a closed water system, a properly sized pressure relief valve may be substituted in place of a thermal expansion tank. For closed water systems created by backflow protection in manufactured housing, as required in Section 890.1140(i), a ballcock with a relief valve may be substituted for the thermal expansion tank.
