Are Saddle Valves Safe

I blogged about how saddle valves are illegal products in Minnesota nearly five years ago, but it's time for an update on that topic with some more information. These are devices that allow for a very fast, cheap, do-it-yourself installation of a ¼” water supply line, typically used to supply water to ice makers and whole-house humidifiers.

The needle just pokes a hole in the pipe, and I've heard it can be done without even turning off the water... not that I've ever tried. These saddle valves are prone to leakage, and they're not allowed by the Minnesota State Plumbing Code.

There is actually nothing in the Minnesota State Plumbing Code that specifically prohibits these types of valves ; they're just not approved. Section 4715.0420 of the MN State Plumbing Code gives a list of approval standards.

When installing an ice maker or whole-house humidifier, tap off of an existing water line with a proper tee fitting and have a proper shutoff valve installed. There has been a saddle valve installed for the ice maker at my own house since I moved in over four year ago.

I haven't touched it and it hasn't leaked, but I thought this would make for a nice little project where I could lay out the basic steps of replacing a saddle valve. To replace a saddle valve or tee off an existing water line, start by obtaining the needed parts.

I'm assuming the saddle valve is connected to a ½” copper water line. If you're comfortable soldering copper tubing and you already have the equipment to do it, this project will cost about $10.

Push fittings are extremely easy to use, requiring no special tools to make connections to copper, Ex, or CPC tubing. This should leave a small gap in the water line, which you'll bridge with the tee fitting.

Stick the short length of copper tubing into the open end of the tee fitting; this is what you'll need to connect the stop valve to. The easiest way to supply water is a self-tapping saddle valve attached to a pipe on the other side of the wall.

I have heard mixed things about saddle valves in the past regarding their durability and being prone to leaks. Option #2 is to replace the valve in the hall bath and snake a water line from there.

The refrigerator is located in a utility room on the other side of the wall from the vanity and with all the old plumbing removed, it was handy do solder in a replacement valve. I'd guess it's been there since the early to mid 90s and hasn't caused me any trouble.

When we had our furnace replaced last year it worked as needed. Place a real valve next to it so you can shut off the water in case the appliance springs a leak.

But I couldn't get my crimping tool into the cramped space, so I tried these--very easy. I had changed it out 3 times due to it leaking within a 5-year period.

Eventually I went and got some shark bite fittings and put in a ball valve instead. No leaks in the past 2 years and very easy to install even in very cramped quarters.

Might check, in some places saddle valves are no longer code. The tubing however, when my kitchen was remodeled, I had a fancy fridge installed with the icemaker/water dispenser, the factory supplied plastic tube became brittle and cracked/leaked about two years later.

I replaced with a copper tube and it is still good ten years later. The steel reinforced hoses are good too, I have them on all four of my toilets and the clothes' washer.

From the workshop under the staircase, Clinton Township, MI Temper Appear! It started leaking and since the humidifier wasn't used my dad just removed it and repaired the pipe.

The plumber when my house was built used a real valve and fitting under the kitchen sink. They look Cheesy as all get out, but they work \I think one constant you have to have is that the tap not be in a place where it's going to get bumped around.
