WELCOME TO OUR INDEPENDENT UK BASED ACOUSTIC GUITAR FORUM I've been saving for some time to buy a step up from my the guitar I have now (faith naked Venus).

My plan was to go into a dedicated guitar shop, try all the second hand and new guitars around the <£1500 mark and buy “the one”, or at least one that I feel was a significant improvement in playability and sound etc. I'm now not sure whether I need to as this R7 sire appears to trump this price range from what I could gather from the review.

I cannot find any reviews of these guitars online other than the one coming directly from the seller. A quick look gave me an idea of the price range, and as such I doubt that they'd be significantly “better” in any way than your existing Faith, which is a pretty nice instrument anyway.

Reviews can be deceptive, and internet sound not necessarily representative. Your other plan of trawling guitar shop(s) for something around £1.5k stands a much better chance of finding significant improvement, esp if buying used.

Playability is secondary as decent setup can make almost any guitar (other than a basket case) play easily. Things can be changed to suit you and your playing style really easily.

This is certainly in his price range, and you'd be getting a luthier-built instrument that will, almost certainly, be better than something mass-produced. If you follow his link for Francis he has some nice looking guitars, and that small jumbo looks like it should live at my house. I can feel GAS coming on.

Posts: 1,137My main instrument is: Brook Tamar in Spruce and Walnut I took a long time to realize what I was actually after / what worked best for me in terms of size, scale length, not width, string spacing etc.

The headstock is slightly larger (wider and taller) than a Gibson Les Paul, so it might be a snug fit in some LP style cases. The Sire logo and Larry Carlton signature are rendered tastefully, and not overly ostentatious.

The L7 inlays really pop in color contrast, though I think they look a little too bright and fake close up. The frets are both wider and taller than the Gibson and iPhone Les Paul equivalents that I have played to the extent that I think that this may have some bearing on the limit to which the action can be lowered.

The pick guard is solid and not moving anywhere, much thicker and better fitted than the ones on the 2019 Gibson Les Paul Studio Tribute. A review of this guitar in Transparent blue on the Anderson website states that upon examination the bridge and tailpiece are Goth.

Intonation at the bridge is set perfectly and there is plenty of space to adjust each string in either direction, which doesn't always happen on Gibson's and Earphones. The pinstripe detailing on the binding is almost flawless, except that it doesn't quite match at the pointed upper horn and there is a gap of around 1 mm.

Into a clean amp (Sermon Iridium), it is evident straight away that the pickups aren't as high output as a Gibson 490r/t. Playing some chords on clean, the guitar doesn't chime or ring out as much as a Gibson.

I'm sure the GTR is very playable out of the box especially for the price as sire has an excellent reputation. But when it comes to the electronics it becomes too costly to change out and as you said it might be better spent on a higher level GTR out of the gate.

The binding on the neck is well executed, though again there are some flecks of lacquer dried onto it, so it isn't pristine. The neck profile is relatively slim and the join to the headstock feels very smooth.

The back of the neck is a satin finish, whereas the rest of the guitar is gloss. The boundary of the finish between gloss and satin is visible, and I wonder how it will wear.

If you listen to the current online demos of this guitar, for the most part the sounds you will hear are people playing single note lead lines. When you play some open chords with some overdrive you hear the true voicing of the pickups, and this sound is not for me.

In summary, given all I'd heard about the build quality of the Sire, I was disappointed to receive one with these blemishes. I could mod it for sure, but after £300 for some Gibson / Seymour Duncan pickups, a setup, and some new pots I'd still have a guitar with these blemishes.

This is a $600 guitar, right? What happened with Sire's first gen basses is, they hit the market and got immediate feedback from buyers. Pictures would have been the icing on the cake of this thread. I'd agree with dark that you can't compare this guitar to a Gibson Les Paul which is more than 4x the cost.

I wondered if anyone might question why I compared the Sire L7 to the various Gibson's I mentioned, and I appreciate that the price difference between the two is considerable. Also, here in the UK, some Gibson LP specials with the 490r/t pickups mentioned in the review are currently on sale for £800.

Anderson UK are marketing this guitar as being as good as guitars '4 times the price' (this quote is taken verbatim from their website) and so again if you are considering spending £2000 on a new Les Paul and take what Anderson are saying as true, you may very well be interested in a comparison between an L7 and a Gibson Les Paul. I don't own an iPhone Les Paul and would be interested to hear how the L2s compare to the higher end Epic.

I only thought of writing the review after returning the guitar because of the tooling mark. Just to clarify on the issue of prices and comparisons.

But when it comes to the electronics it becomes too costly to change out and as you said it might be better spent on a higher level GTR out of the gate. A well set up guitar has about the strings at 0.5 mm of the first fret on the low E, and 0.3 mm on the high E.

Add only a couple 10th of mm, and you will immediately feel the difference, and you will find it hard to play. A well set up guitar has about the strings at 0.5 mm of the first fret on the low E, and 0.3 mm on the high E.

My understanding was that these were unabashedly improved 'performance' designs over a straight reading of a Start, Les Paul etc. I would have preferred to see a shrunk down headstock with straight string pull and maybe a slightly less extreme break angle over the nut to promote tuning stability.
