It's strongly akin to the Bond films of yore with fewer explosions, gadgets and women named Pussy Galore, though there was a Desiree Muirhead. What I like most about this trope is the protagonists usually discover that they aren't as opposite as they initially believed which is largely the case between Collin and Oliver.

It's the perfect breeding ground for hate fucking and/or angry sex and that was delivered. Recommend to MM romance fans who can suspend disbelief and enjoy a sexy thriller.

“Seven-CardStud” is the second book in Ava Drake's Wild Cards series but can easily be read as a stand-alone. A suave British agent (think James Bond) spots a neoprene-clad swimmer off the coast of Gibraltar.

When the swimmer fails to come up to the surface, the agent dives into the icy waters. “Seven- Cards starts with a bang as Collin, usually a behind-the-scenes intelligence analyst for the private security firm Wild Cards, rescues Oliver.

Lean-jawed shaggy blonde Oliver, a mathematics genius and former world-class poker player, is currently living the carefree life of a surf bum. Turns out they are both in Gibraltar to participate in a nefarious high stakes poker game.

(view spoiler) [There's an international crime syndicate, faked deaths, plastic surgery, assassins and more all jam-packed into the later pages of the book. (hide spoiler)] All these elements pushed me way past the point of willful disbelief and made the ending seems cobbled together.

But on the whole, “Seven- Cards is a fun wild ride of a book if you're a fan of hot sexy spies, espionage and mystery I received an ARC of this book from Dream spinner Press in exchange for an honest review.

Collin, working for a high-end security company as a skilled mathematician, is sent to infiltrate a secret high-roller poker tournament in Gibraltar. He meets Oliver, surfer dude, mathematic genius and ex-pro poker player.

The ultimate winnings from the tournament are unknown and both are there to find out what it is. The events that follow, aside from a few hot sexual encounters, are often fun and mos. Yes, the plot is ultimately complete Swiss cheese, unless miraculous measures are available, which is the norm in OUT spy themes. “Opposites might attract, but that would only last up to the point where they attacked and killed each other.” Collin Callahan, British secret agentSecrets, intrigue, and danger abound in this thriller about a high-stakes international poker game where attracting the wrong people’s attention will get you killed.

‘Seven- Cards is an action-packed battle for supremacy based on psychological cleverness, the ability to outwit your opponent, and the willingness to do whatever it takes to win. “Opposites might attract, but that would only last up to the point where they attacked and killed each other.” Collin Callahan, British secret agentSecrets, intrigue, and danger abound in this thriller about a high-stakes international poker game where attracting the wrong people’s attention will get you killed.

They seem like complete opposites and would have probably passed like ships in the night had they not been forced to pool their resources just to stay alive. This novel turned out to be an intense page-turner that had me at the edge of my seat throughout the developments on multiple fronts, and right up until the final resolution.

Collin works for Wildcards Inc. and is a British intelligence analyst turned field agent because of his ability to do math in his head. The British government wants to find out who is behind the most secret and high-stakes international poker game in history, and assigns Wildcard Inc. to the job.

Oliver is an American, a former professional gambler who has been banned from most of the world’s casinos because he always wins due to his mathematical prowess. He has gone off the radar, mostly to escape his incredibly powerful father and his never-ending attempts to get Oliver to work for the family business.

Oliver enjoys his freedom as a surfer and beach bum, but when he receives an invitation to a secret poker game and is told his entry fee of one million dollars has already been paid, he can’t resist. Both men quickly realize they need to stick together if they want to find out who is killing the players and why.

Seeing them working together in and out of bed was a thrilling experience for me, and by the time the author was done with all the twists and turns, revelations, and super suspenseful developments, I felt thoroughly entertained. If you like high-stakes games and the gamblers who excel at beating their opponents by any means at their disposal, if a closeted secret agent and an out-and-proud pseudo-beach-bum pairing up to work together sounds interesting, and if you’re looking for a suspenseful, action-packed psychological thriller that includes murder and intrigue galore, then you will probably like this novel as much as I do.

On hearing a jet ski coming straight for him, he dives deep to avoid impact. When he surfaces he sees a fully clothed man getting into difficulties in the icy water, and resolves to save him.

After a little dialogue, it becomes clear that they are both in the exclusive and probably very shady elite poker competition, Oliver to win the mystery prize, and Colin to infiltrate the contest sufficiently to find out the details of the contest and the organizers for his employer. When top players keep disappearing or winding up dead, Oliver and Colin join forces working out who is behind the whole thing.

Oliver fears it could be his overly controlling father and Colin worries that the fact he isn't a real poker player could put both their lives in jeopardy. Both men give in to the sizzling heat between them, hot sex notwithstanding, the love that develops was not expected by either man.

There’s family conflict, job pressures, lots of poker, sexy men falling into bed together, killers, shark attacks, computer wizardry, faked death, corpses in hotel kitchen freezers, and plenty of bad guys! Our main characters are American and English and the narrator did a super job at characterizing them both.

The world building was terrific and the majority of the supporting cast were superbly evil. 3.5 stars“Seven Cards” by Ava Drake is a good combination of danger, mystery, espionage and romance.

Also, the inclusion of a “stiff and proper” British character fed my fantasy of a gay “James Bond” completely. The MCs were a complete contrast in characters and personalities and thus their romance with a backdrop of danger and intrigue kept me hooked till the end.

Collin Callahan, a British government plant is pitted against math genius/surfer bum, Oliver Elliot aka Gun when they face off in a secret, high stakes poker game. Oliver’s lazy surfer facade quickly wears off when Collin gets a glimpse of the brilliant mind behind.

When top players start to get killed one by one, Collin and Oliver form an unlikely team to watch each others back and survive till the very end. Collin and Oliver’s secret, “at the moment” hook-ups adds to the overall incognito nature of their romance.

If you have seen “Casino Royale” then you could easily imagine the “all or nothing” gambling that both Collin and Oliver were caught up in the book. He very much despises the “rude, lazy but sexy” Oliver on sight, but he can’t help the pull he feels towards the man.

Oliver has never tried to get emotionally involved with his random hook ups till then, but Collin is the man whom he trusts with his heart for the first time. Oliver quickly turns into an ally who helps Collin a lot with his sharp mind and instincts.

They made a great team but as can be expected there were a lot of secrets about Oliver which generates distrust between the pair. The ending of the story or rather the culmination of the mystery decreased my rating for this book considerably.

I won’t give out the details, but I want to say that I could not understand the villain’s motive in conducting the poker tournament at all. He wanted a specific someone to win to get him under his thumb, but he was unconcerned if that same person is killed by the other competitors of the game.

Readers who love to read about covert missions and espionage along with their dose of romance then definitely pick this book up. ARC provided by the publisher through Scattered Thoughts and Rogue Words in exchange for an impartial review.

There was sex, and some of it smoking hot, but the MCs constantly bantered back and forth, sometimes sounding as if they were speaking truthfully when what they had to say wasn’t what I’d expect from two men falling for each other. Some of the things that occurred as the story was coming to a climax didn’t make sense to me.

Things such as Collin’s wireless being jammed, and yet, the next day it’s revealed how Oliver contacted (spoiler) to communicate urgent information. **3.75**Things start dramatically straight away as Collin dives to save Oliver from a near death experience which is quickly followed by the two men heading straight into the mystery of why amateur and professional poker players have been gathered in secret for the ultimate tournament.

These are two very different men in their history and approach to life, but they bounce off of each other very well making for entertaining conversations. Though, my first thought was that they have been portrayed as very stereotypical, uptight British and beach bum Californian.

Collin is a little more rigid in the way he comes across, still struggling to move on after losing his partner a couple of years ago. Oliver has actually been living the beach bum life but for darker reasons that you would originally think. The relationship flows and feels like it develops quite naturally between them or at least as much as it can in such a tense situation with dead bodies beginning to appear not long after the tournament starts.

There's big intrigue as to who is behind it, Oliver with his suspicions and it being the reason Collin is there in the first place, to find out who's there and running the show. I enjoyed the couple playing detective together, two very intelligent men putting their minds to good use.

I did think it got a little crazy towards the end with how the plot ultimately plays out, reminded me a little of the cheesy action flicks that go a little overboard, but you can't help but watch and enjoy. It made me think a little of the film Speed where they say about relationships not lasting when built on intense situations but there was more than just physical attraction between them.

He comes from a very wealthy family but has no interest in being part of the business and walked away from them to become a beach bum. He’s surprised to get an invitation to this exclusive tournament, and to find that his $1 million-dollar entry fee was paid for him.

Soon the strongest players in the tournament end up being killed and Collin must figure out what’s going on before it’s too late for him or Oliver. Collin and Oliver work together to solve the puzzle of the tournament and get more than they bargained when they spend time together.

There are a few sexy scenes between Oliver and Collin that scorch the pages, but they actually are developing a relationship and not just spending all their alone time together naked. I don’t think this was the typical whodunit type of story, there were a lot of elements to solving the crimes happening during this tournament and after.

And, there is no HE, the book ends with a cliffhanger that means you’re going to have to read it to see if Oliver and Collin can manage to overcome the obstacles in their way. There is a lot more story to go as this private security group continue their undercover operation.

He was not expecting to find Oliver Elliot, a math genius turned surfer bum, and he certainly did not think he could fall for someone like him so quickly. But when other players start turning up dead, Collin and Oliver both realize something sinister is going on.

This is not specifically a criticism of the narrators themselves both of whom I've given good reviews in the past, including 4* for Ace in the Hole the previous book in this series. However, either neither can do a credible non-American accent, or the production team are actually encouraging them to speak like it's time for panto.

Just listen to his production of Between Ghosts to hear how UK should sound or Patchwork Paradise for one example of a great European accent. Again, this is not so much criticism of John Solo, who does excellent work on the majority of books he narrates.

I wouldn't expect any actor, with the workload he obviously has, to come up with credible accents form around the world at a drop of a hat and with probably very little time to practice, when he is great at what he usually does. He's a highly intelligent man that is squandering all of that away to run away from the family business. Collin is a desk jockey for Wild Cards Inc, sent in to figure out the endgame in this unusual poker game.

He ends up meeting Oliver in a botched attempt to save his life and the two start a relationship of mutual competition with friendly antagonism. They both have to change how they are willing to be for the public to help each other and stumble their way through this new relationship in a way that feels real.

The action was a little choppy but altogether came about to create a fast-paced read that kept me interested in what was going to happen. Not to mention staying alive long enough to hopefully get to the end of the tournament and find out exactly what the payout will be, since that seems to be some kind of big mystery in and of itself. Oliver, in my opinion, is just too smart for his own good.

Oliver, in my opinion, is just too smart for his own good. He acts like a dumb beach bum who only enjoys to surf, but that is so far from the truth that I began to wonder if Oliver even realizes he is as smart as he is at some points.

When Collin tries to rescue Oliver from the freezing cold water after it looks like he has been run over by a jet sky, their worlds as they know them will never be the same. Coming together as complete strangers in a dangerous situation to find the person who is able to break through the walls that they each had built up around their heart is an incredible story.

This had me hooked from chapter one! Whether she needed to do the research or just is a poker aficionado, I learned a bit about Texas Hold ‘Em while reading this, and it was pretty interesting. The math and subtleties of betting etc were really well done as Oliver explained things to Collin in a way that made sense without feeling like an info dump. It’s there, however, that the plot begins to have some holes.

Oliver has such a fun personality; he’s laid back and just can’t help giving the pompous “Mr. The competition is cutthroat and its players include Albanian mobsters, hustlers and criminals and murders.

We know he was usually not in the field, but I figured he would have more of a Secret Agent feel to him, but one minute he did and the next he was just a normal guy. The ending left this book open for a sequel, so I'm not sure if we'll be seeing more of Collin and Oliver or not.
