Best Broodmare Sires Australia

Most leading broodmare sires of today were, or still are, among the most successful sires of winners as they generally receive good opportunities when retired from the track and take to stud strong female pedigrees. As a general comment, I believe you should always be looking for mares from strong female lines with black type close up, good conformation and as much racing performance as you can afford.

Always remember, though, your selection of a stallion for the mare you acquire will be critical in determining your chances of breeding an outstanding racehorse. In Australia these include Atlantic Jewel, Mo sheen, Sea Siren, Driefontein, First Seal, Amicus, Irish Lights and Wichita, while in Europe he has left English Oaks winner Qualify, Diamondsandrubies and others.

Apart from his great sire Dane hill, Fast net Rock’s pedigree features a host of other stallions whose daughters have done well as producers, Royal Academy, Nijinsky, Marauding, Sir Tristan and Twig Moss. Major winners already out of Fast net Rock mares include Omar Sword, New Predator, Changed, Traci, and Santa Ana Lane, so if you can find and afford fearful sire she could prove to be a great buy.

Dancing’s top class son Hard Spun, a Gr.1-winning sprinter who placed in the Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes, was somewhat underappreciated when he shuttled to Victoria for Darla from 2008 to 2013 although he left around 500 foals and received the support of many well-related mares. The Champion Three Year-Old in France over middle distances in 2010, Lope de Vega, a useful juvenile, captured the classic Gr.1 double of the Pole d’Essie DES Plains (1600 m) and the PRI Du Jockey Club (2100 m).

This son of leading sire Chaparral from Storm Cat’s male line carries a powerful 3fx3m cross of the superbly bred sire Machiavellian (Mr. Prospector) and while he spent only four seasons on the shuttle from Ireland to Patina ck Farm in NSW I feel he may leave a lasting legacy via his broodmare daughters. Lope de Vega mares should make good mates for many Danehill-line stallions and should be buyable for reasonable prices.

Given a 130 rating by Time form after winning the 2010 English 2000 Guineas-Gr.1 and a 1600 m Gr.1 in France, Make shuttled to New Zealand’s West bury Stud between 2011 and 2016 but sadly we are unlikely to see him again after his sale to Japan. With stallions such as Green Desert, Irish River, Sir Ivor and Val DE Lois on his dam’s side, Make looks a great prospect to do well as a maternal grand sire.

Injured and unplaced at his only start, superbly bred Raise The Flag, a half-brother to leading European sire Danilo and six other stakes winners from famous producer Easily, found a home at White Robe Lodge on New Zealand’s South Island where he followed two other non-performers with wonderful pedigrees in Millay and Noble Bijou, who both became highly influential sires. Daughters of Raise The Flag should be available at relatively low cost and most will also have stout female pedigrees, making them very suitable as mates for speed sires, particularly those from Dane hill’s male line.

Champion sire Better Boy (My Baby) also appears in the female half of Sebring’s pedigree lending further strength. From Hail to Reason’s male line, Sebring passes on both speed and a degree of stamina, so he is likely to make a major contribution as a maternal grand sire in future seasons.

Now standing in Western Australia after beginning his career at Hidden Stud in NSW, Snippet son was a brilliant, stakes-winning sprinter but his 12 stakes winners include a number effective over middle distances such as Fast Clip, Kentwood, My Pipette, Rebel son and Verger. A stallion who never stood at a high fee, Snippet son has more than 900 living foals up to last season, so there should be no shortage of daughters.

Courtesy of Marion Pedigrees, the below tables reflect updated information for the Australian & New Zealand General Sire Premierships for the 2018/2019 racing season. Includes information from North America, England, Ireland, France, Germany, Italy, and the United Arab Emirates as contained in our database.

Through the 2019 season we seemingly never had to wait too long for the next big-race triumph for a son or daughter of a mare by Pivotal (GB) (Polar Falcon). It is no surprise, therefore, that the 27-year-old Chesley Park Stud patriarch has ended the year not merely completing a hat-trick of titles as Champion Broodmare Sire of Great Britain and Ireland but also topping the European table too.

It would, though, be grossly unfair too Pivotal to attribute his success as a broodmare sire solely to the fact that his daughters are generally compatible with Galileo. For one thing, a mare has to be high-class to merit a place in Galileo’s book, whoever she is by; secondly, Pivotal’s daughters regularly produce good horses from a broad spectrum of stallions.

Dane hill’s regular presence among the leaders is easy to understand when one bears in mind that the most obviously successful nick of the current century has been ‘Galileo over a Dane hill mare’, a recipe which has yielded 15 individual Group 1 winners headed by Frankel. Dane hill was Champion Broodmare Sire during Frankel’s final season of racing in 2012 (thus ending the seven-year reign of Sadler’s Wells) and then topped the table again in both 2014 and ’15.

Dane hill’s best representative as a dam sire in 2019 was G1 Judgment Grand Prix de Paris and G1 Judgment International winner Japan (GB), one of three Group 1 winners of 2019 bred on the tried-and-tested Galileo x Dane hill cross which also struck gold with G1 Comer Group International Irish St Leger heroine Search For A Song (Ire) and Cape of Good Hope (Ire), a stakes' winner during the year in both England and Australia. Galileo also regularly gets good results from Dane hill Dancer mares and this cross yielded two top-class 3-year-olds of 2019: G1 St James’s Palace S. and G1 PRI Du Cousin de Longchamp winner Circus Maximus (Ire) and G1 Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby winner Sovereign (Ire).

Nestling in among these greats is another legend: Mon sun (Ger) occupied fifth place thanks to the G1 Qatar PRI DE l’Arc de Triomphe winner Wildcat (GB) (Galileo {GB}) whose earnings account for more than half of his maternal grand sire’s total. Oasis Dream (GB) and Chaparral deserve credit as the only two horses in the top 10 in the GB/Ire table aged less than 20.

Chaparral, of course, had a fantastic season as a sire of racehorses thanks to his three Group 1-winning 2-year-old colts headed by the champion Pinatubo (Ire) but, already well established as an wonderful broodmare sire, he also featured prominently in this role, his grandchildren headed by G1 Bet fair Haddock Park Sprint Cup S. winner Hello Domain (Fr) (Zodiac {GB}). By topping the table in Great Britain and Ireland for a third consecutive year he has, as highlighted above, joined an elite band alongside St Simon and Sadler’s Wells.

As regards his place among the broodmare sires pantheon of the modern era, he has now put himself alongside the legendary Habitat (Champion Broodmare Sire of Great Britain and Ireland in 1987, ’94 and ’96) and ahead of both Darshan (GB) and Rainbow Quest (GB) who each topped the table twice. Invincible, a stunning Group 1-winning mare who is special to our team having won three Magic Millions races in consecutive years.

And the fourth is Unforgotten, a gorgeous mare with an exquisite pedigree who won the ATC Oaks in the fastest time ever. Resulting from the first crop of Ouster, himself a Group One winning Magic Millions graduate, this daughter of Solar Charged lit up the sales ring at $300,000 and then returned almost twelve months to the day to secure a blazing two length victory in the $2m Magic Millions 2YO Classic at her fourth race start.

Remarkably her third race over a 21-day period, it was this combination of precocious toughness and brilliance that saw Sunlight a six time stakes' performer at two. Her astonishing performance in the 2019 Newmarket, in what was regarded as the best field the race has seen, was against a star-studded line up of 22 including seven individual Group One winner.

Champion stallion Fast net Rock has sired three Oaks winners during his illustrious globetrotting career at stud amidst 39 of his progeny amassing individual Group One wins. A stunner at the yearling sales in 2016 when secured by Chris Waller for NZ$360,000, Unforgotten lived up to her looks and came into her own at three, winning three consecutive races in the Spring before returning to the Autumn as a classic horse in the making.

With six victories spanning 1250 m-2400m and by a champion stallion who has now produced three Group One winner as a broodmare sire, the striking classic winning Unforgotten is put simply ‘rare air’. She returns to the Gold Coast this July, the scene of her dominant success in the $1m Magic Millions Snippets of January 2018.

The unbridled excitement in the mounting yard of the large ownership group which raced the mare was matched by the electricity of Video’s explosive turn of foot. Located at Cootamundra in New South Wales, Twin Hills Stud is situated near where Only’s family have bred some of Australia’s greatest racehorses.

Baguette, Tie The Knot and Spinning Hill all carried the Wait family’s famous red and white colors to multiple Group 1 victories. Twin Hills is perfectly situated between the Hunter Valley and North East Victoria, providing access to both of Australia’s most prominent breeding areas.
