Every Gazelle Hand guard is purpose-built to give you full modularity and maintain a durable, rigid platform for mounting lights, sights, and other accessories. Many models include Geissele's proprietary 2.25-inch long barrel nut for more contact where the rail connects to the receiver and reliable continuity for the entire length of the free float rail.

Nick Serena: It’s a really strong rail system when it comes to taking abuse. These rails are really ruggedized, and used by lot of folks in military and law enforcement, on state and federal tactical teams.

With wedges that go along the side, I find that no matter where I put my hand on the rail, my thumb rides nicely where I place it… Nick Serena: If you’re a builder who prefer a slimmer profile, which is the way a lot of folks are going now, we offer the more narrow MK13 and MK14 options.

For those guys who use a c-clamp, that really aggressive thumb-over-bore grip that came out of 3-gun and are looking for a tighter grip…the MK13 and MK14 are a great option. Top to bottom: MK14, MK13, MK4 We do have a slightly different barrel nut for those, just to make sure that everything is rigid, because we most certainly look at these as workhorse rails as well.

Diego Maya: Certainly, one of the very important things that gives the Easel Super Modular Rails their rigidity is that big barrel nut that we use. It’s on par with many steel barrel nuts, but you actually drop weight…and in an age of weight-savings, every ounce helps.

Nick Serena: For someone who is new and cutting their teeth on building an AR, the Easel Super Modular Rails are ideal. Or perhaps you buy that M&P, and the next thing you know, you’re stripping the whole upper because you want to put a new rail on there and all of that other fun stuff.

Mrgunsngear goes over the installation of the Easel Mk14… As a builder, it’s going to be faster for you because you are not timing the barrel nut to anything. As you put the barrel nut on there, because of the way it is shaped, you just torque that sucker down to 40 pounds, and that’s it.

Which reminds me, all of our AR-15 rails come with gas blocks, so you’re pretty much set. Diego Maya: This is not just for our rails …it goes for our triggers, our charging handles and everything else that we make.

That said, I want to stress that we’re never making a batch extra special because we know it’s going to end up overseas with soldiers or because it’s going into the hands of law enforcement. No Playing Favorites Every time we get an order, what everyone receives is simply coming off of the shelf.

So, every part that leaves here, whether it is going to end up being put on a rifle that’s a “safe queen” or whether it’s going to be out there in the field doing rough work, the buyer, no matter who it is, can take comfort knowing it’s the exact same part. We’re very proud of that, and we take a lot of pride in what we’re making here…and that goes for every single product.

Easel Super Modular MK4 Drop Test… Nick Serena: To piggyback off of what Diego just said… In our customer service department, we have a rule that’s written up there…and it says treat everyone like they’re a 4-star general.” We try to our best because we’re all 2nd Amendment-loving folks. We respect the heck out of our service members and our law enforcement guys and all those armed professionals out there…but we live in a country that affords us the right to defend ourselves as well.

Diego Maya: Well, just in terms of fit and finish… Have you ever had a cheap rail and slid your hand over it and almost cut yourself? Whereas, a cheaper and less effective coating on a lesser rail is going to come off and effectively be worthless relatively quickly, so you’re going to have that corrosion resistance be removed lot faster.

Of course, that will affect some users more than others, depending on their environment, but it’s something that is worthy of note, in my opinion. So, when someone has a sturdy, reliable rail that that is locked in there nice and tight, and it’s keeping that barrel free to do what it is supposed to do…that is definitely going to have a positive impact on your shooting.

Diego Maya: There’s also the whole idea of “buying once and crying once.” And, also keep in mind that the secondary market for Easel products is very strong. Say for example a Easel trigger is $240 on any given day… You’ll find them online, used for $160, $180…so, if for whatever reason, you make the mistake of selling your Easel product, at least you’ll get a lot of your money back, versus if you have some second-tier garbage, you might as well just put it in the trash can.

I read what I thought is that a Easel MK8 9.5 inch rail will easily install and replace the factory rail. I am looking for any good brand rail that I can get that I can easily take the factory quad rail off and install an Alok without a lot of work.

I'm not sure if you need a special wrench for the DD rail barrel nut, but you'll need some basic tools to replace a rail. You'll need something to hold the upper in a vise to loosen and tighten the barrel nut.

Wheel bearing grease will work but Roswell 33ms is the recommended grease. Since you said price isn't really a factor, I would recommend an SLR Rifle works rail. They have a few models with various rail options (key mod or Alok, reg, lite and ultra lite) and it clamps onto the provided barrel nut.

DD uses a proprietary nut wrenchTake a look at the Bravo Company KM But both rails require proper barrel but wrenches to remove or install.

Personally I would sell your upper and buy another upper with the rail you prefer, but if you have the brown mk18 RIS rail, it's highly sought after and can go for upwards of 300 bucks. I don't really know why, I have a 6.8 Bison Armory 11.5 inch SBR in Alok that I really like.

Though the MK18 quad rail is a bit heavier in the SBR platform it is very easy to get a grip on and control the gun. I really want to try this MK18 with a super thin and super lightweight Alok and if I don't like it put the quad rail back on.

That's the main reason I wanted to find one that is easy to install. Priced just right or a bit low, and it will sell in less than an hour.

As Jack Black said, ease of installation is relative. I recently upgraded my first AR build from a Magnum MOE hand guard (clam shell) with a free float rail (Matrix Arms) and it took me less than 15 mins.

I think with the barrel nut preloaded correctly and a final torque in the 60-80ft/lbs range it shouldn't move. I am looking for any good brand rail that I can get that I can easily take the factory quad rail off and install an Alok without a lot of work.

This product is bundled with a low-profile Easel Super Gas Block, a $59 value, and an installation wrench; I think with the barrel nut preloaded correctly and a final torque in the 60-80ft/lbs range it shouldn't move.

You're obviously not an operator and don't need the pin I'm not a fan of the NOR because of the way it mounts with screws. I've never handled one, so I can't say for sure, but I think the clamp on types like the Easel and SLR is more secure and easier to install.

Is the pin's sole purpose to limit hand guard rotation on the nut? Or...barrel nut/hand guard assembly combined? Edit: After some further research I've read that some guys do not add the pin.

I checked my Novene Rogue Hunter upper, and the pin is not factory installed. Looks like the pin is to prevent the barrel nut and rail from spinning.

The issue I have with the type of mount where you use screws to secure the rail to the barrel nut is that the holes for the screws have some play or slop, so you need to make sure the rail is positioned correctly before tightening them all down. There is also some slop, although minimal with the NOR, between the rail and the barrel nut.

On the clamp on styles, they are more secure all around the barrel nut. I'm more confident with Novene's implementation of their design than I would be with a Chinese knock off.

The clamp style is almost idiot-proof to install. I'm not sure why, but I had one guy pm me to see if I wanted to sell my hand guard as he liked the first gen clamp better than the current version.

The Matrix Arms I upgraded my 1st AR is a similar clamp style and very inexpensive ($80 with a low profile gas block shipped! Even at 30ft/lbs, it would be VERY hard to loosen a barrel nut with the rail.

Both my AR barrel nuts are set to about 50ft/lbs and have not moved at all. When I replaced the rail on my 1st AR, the nut was still nice and tight.
