It's a vacation destination where hosts share their Western lifestyle activities to guests, according to the Dude Ranchers' Association. Although many died out by the 80s, the Adirondacks is still home to a scenic byway called the “Dude Ranch Trail,” which makes a 40-mile loop through Lake George.

There are more than 80 various themed rustic Adirondack cabins overlooking the scenic Hudson River. Formerly known as 1,000 Acres Ranch Resort, this property was founded in 1942 by John and Ester Are hart.

Background: Located at the foot of the Catskill Mountains, this fourth generation ranch is owned by the Handel family. After working in New York City, he started Tangle wood Ranch because he fell in love with Ginger who would only marry him if he bought her a horse farm in Catskills.

Background: Nestled in the woods and located about five miles from Lake George, this ranch began as a dream of Albany realtor Joseph Garry Sr. in 1946. Joe Jr. had a more active role at the ranch helping out with the front desk and in the dining rooms.

Accommodation: Family summer vacation package for four days, three nights start at $890. In 2018, it was renamed Pine Ridge Dude Ranch when the former barn manager Mike Offer and two investors bought the property and spent a $1 million to revive the resort.

Although Coolie and Gloria were born in New York City, their love for horses developed at an early age. Although they went to school and held jobs in the city to support the family, their weekends were spent upstate working at dude ranches around the Catskills to earn extra money and occasionally ride horses.

Coolie and Gloria’s son Steven joined the operation upon college graduation in 1980, coming on as the Food and Beverage Director. Sadly, after 45 years of dedicating his life to Rocking Horse Ranch, Coolie passed away in the spring of 2002.

Gloria remains active as she rides and feeds the horses and greets families daily. The couple continue to make Rocking Horse one of America’s premier family destinations.
