Horses are extremely important in both RDR2's story mode and Red Dead Online, not only for transportation, but also in combat and in a variety of other situations. While there are a lot of viable types, only a few of them can be considered the absolute best to obtain in the story mode.

Wild horses have the same stats as the ones that can be purchased with only a few exceptions, so you don't have to worry about getting an inferior horse if you choose to tame a wild one. Horses in RDR2 are divided into six different categories, which determine their starting stats and how much they can be improved.

While there are differences between standard, race, elite and heavy, they are not so big as to pose any problem while riding. Draft horses have average health, stamina, speed, and acceleration.

Race horses have high speed and acceleration but low health and stamina. These horses are wonderful when you're trying to get away from the law as quickly as possible, but the low health and stamina will eventually force you to use horse medicine when in the heat of battle, as they have a hard time surviving intense shooting and chase sequences.

Using a riding horse is best avoided at all times except for the very beginning of the story mode when money is low and there aren't many other options available. Superior horses are, as the name implies, the best horses in Red Dead Redemption 2.

They are not the best for escaping from enemies, but they can take a hit like no other horse type can, so they are extremely reliable for most story missions where you must fight your way through on horseback. Work horses are far from being the best horses, with high stamina but average health and speed, and low acceleration.

There are three different variants of this horse type: Black, Rose Grey Bay, and White. The Black Arabian comes with health, stamina, speed and acceleration stats at 6, and it can be purchased for $1,050.

The Rose Grey Bay has slightly better health and stamina, both at 7, than the Black Arabian, but it costs a bit more, $1,250. If you really like the White Arabian, but don't want to spend so much money to get it, you can capture a wild one near Lake Isabella, which is located to the west of the “A” in Marino on the map.

Both the Amber Champagne and the Silver Dapple Pinto come with the same stats: 5 health, 6 stamina, 7 speed and 5 acceleration. The low health makes the Missouri Fox Trotter a very bad choice for combat situations, so you may want to look at another horse if you're aiming to fight on horseback a lot.

The Turbofan has considerably better health than the Missouri Fox Trotter, 7 instead of 5, slightly lower speed, 6 instead of 7, and identical stamina and acceleration, 5. The Turbofan can be a good choice for horse races as well, and it can be acquired much more easily, as the Dark Bay Coat is unlocked at rank 56.

Both types are available for a low price, $125, and they come with some above average stats: 7 in health, 5 in stamina, 3 in speed and acceleration, making them a bad choice for races but a more than solid one for Free Roam. Once you have made enough money, you can purchase a second stable stall to claim the remaining horse.

Story mode also features some additional saddles that can be purchased from any trapper, given the player has specific items in his or her possession. For Red Dead Online, you need to reach the required rank before being able to purchase any of the horse upgrades.

Saddles are the best way to upgrade horses, as they provide the best stats improvements. These improvements, however, come at a cost, as both health and stamina cores will drain faster than usual.

They can only be purchased by owning the correct perfect skin or pelt, and they bring no performance change beyond that of the upgraded variant of each saddle. Bear Dakota Saddlebag Mother Hubbard SaddleBeaver Roping SaddleCougar McClelland SaddlePanther Trail SaddleRattlesnake Vaquero Saddle Stirrups provide improvements to the speed and acceleration stats at the cost of faster core drain.

Saddle Bags increase the item carrying capacity of the horse. In this guide, we will cover all the wild horse breeds locations as well as some general tips that will help you catch and break wild horses.

There are a lot of different breeds in the game, so finding the best possible horse is a fun, but money and time-consuming, activity. Not counting purchasing them in Stables, it's possible to steal them or catch wild ones that can be found roaming all over the map.

Stealing horses is not really advisable, as you also need to “take care of” any witnesses to prevent getting reported to the law and increasing your bounty. The regular breeds can be encountered in multiple locations, but there are areas where the spawn rate is higher and so it's easier to come across them.

The Wild American Standard bred can be found more often in an area to the north of Valley View, right by the river. The Wild Appaloosa is usually found to the west of Donner Falls, which are located to the north of the Bacchus Bridge.

The Appaloosa is actually a very good horse race in Red Dead Redemption 2, so you may want to bond with one to increase its stats and get yourself a very trusty steed. Specifically, this wild horse breed spawns more often in an open area to the southeast of Fort Riggs, right past the river.

The Wild Kentucky Saddler spawns more often in the open area found to the east of Manzanita Post. If there are no horses around when you reach the area, simply camp, make some time pass and try again.

The Wild Mustang can be found in an area located in the gap between the “L” and “A” in The Heartlands on the map, to the east of Oil Derrick. The Wild Tennessee Walker can be found more often in an area located to the east of Oil Derrick, in the gap between the “L” and “A” in The Heartlands on the map.

Their spawn rate is also considerably lower than regular wild horse breeds, so you may have to come back to their locations multiple times. The Tiger Striped Bay Wild Mustang can only be caught in during the late game, as its only spawn location is found in the southern part of the map.

The horse can be found in the open area directly to the west of the Rio Del Logo Rock. The White Wild Arabian is, without a doubt, the best horse race of Red Dead Redemption 2 and, as such, it requires some effort to catch.

The best thing about the White Wild Arabian horse is not only its speed, the fastest among all wild horses, but also the fact that you can capture the animal as soon as Chapter 2 begins, as the area can be accessed without any particular issue. Some other locations include the Lavender fields near Hanging Dog Ranch, all the way to the west near Little Creek River; also just north of Cattail pond in Grizzlies West, near the Wapiti Reservation just below the letter “R” of “Marino”; and of course the NPC camp mentioned earlier at New Hanover near the oilfield.

A Per lino Andalusian can be found north of Johannesburg by the Brandy wine Drop water fall. For your reference, the location of the horse is slightly above the name “WAPITI INDIAN RESERVATION” on the map.

The Tennessee Walker from Chapter 1 will get you through the tutorial stuff (it has to, after all), but you’ll want to replace the steed as soon as you’re able to. The bad news is, you wouldn’t know it and just because you can get a good horse doesn’t mean it’ll be easy.

Our Red Dead Redemption 2 best horse guide will help you find the best steed and tame it, so you can have an easy time exploring the west. Arabian horses are categorized as ‘superior’, and they are suited for all types of labor.

However, you can’t buy this horse until Chapter 6 or the Epilogue, and they’re very expensive to boot, costing $1,250. By the time you can buy the Grey Arabian, you’ll practically be done with RDR2 ’s story.

After completing Hosea’s first quest in Chapter 2, ‘Exit, Pursued by a Bruised Ego’, you’ll have access to the horse stables, that will let you buy and most importantly store your steeds. The White Arabian horse will be at Lake Isabella in that area, typically at the western bank by the legendary bison.

As the White Arabian is a wild horse, you’ll have to tame it before you can claim it for your own. The horse will attempt to buck you, so make sure to be ready to calm it again when you’re on its back.

Make sure you have proper medicine on hand so your brand new awesome horse in RDR2 doesn’t kick the bucket. One of the unique aspects of Red Dead Redemption 2's gameplay concerns horses.

These horses are also pretty common and can be found all over the Red Dead Redemption 2 map, making them quick and easy to capture and tame. They have seven different coat varieties, with the Red Roan, Black Fabiano, Chestnut and Dapple Bay found in the wild.

They have a unique trot, and their gait makes riding them extremely comfortable. They have excellent health and stamina, and are the fastest of the draft horse breeds.

This means that these horses are also well suited to heavy pulling and hauling, making them perfect for hooking up to wagons and coaches. They are probably one of the strongest horse breeds in the game, but their large size and heavyweight make them more difficult to handle.

Their speed and stamina are just average, though, meaning that they're hardly close to being the best horse for Arthur. Shires come in three coats: Raven Black, Dark Bay and Light Grey, all available in the wild.

The Suffolk Punch is another draft horse in Red Dead Redemption 2. With its stocky and compact frame, it is the perfect breed for heavy labor in farms.

They can work extremely long hours without getting tired and are very sturdy and healthy. If Arthur needs a horse with a lot of strength and endurance, the Suffolk Punch is the right one for that job.

Take the Appaloosa, for example: a horse breed that is perfect for just about any kind of work needed at a ranch. They are also very healthy, and have good speed, agility, and stamina-- something needed in a reliable work horse.

If Arthur wants a horse for a more difficult task, the Appaloosa is a good choice. This includes the Dakota, which has good speed and acceleration, meaning that Arthur can make a fast getaway from trouble if needed.

The majority of Dakota are located in the Western part of the Red Dead Redemption 2 map. Another kind of race horse, this breed is made for athletics, with great stamina, agility, and acceleration.

They are easy to handle but can get a little clumsy if Arthur pushes them too far, past their endurance. The Brindle, which has the highest speed of this breed, is available for purchase in stables, but the others are only available in the wild.

If Arthur looks hard enough, he may also find a rare Thoroughbred: the Seal Brown coat. Another horse that is great for racing or quickly traversing distances is the American Standard bred.

However, they have their faults: they are timid creatures, and loud noises can frighten them and make them act erratically. American Paint horses are extremely intelligent and easy to care for, making them perfect for ranch work.

These horses also have a great personality, making them a good fit for Arthur. The Over and Tobago coats roam the wild ready to get caught by Arthur.

There is also a very rare Splashed White coat wandering around the game map for those who can find it. When it comes to battle, a good war horse is always an excellent choice for Arthur.

In that case, consider the Hungarian Half bred, a strong breed that has good health and stamina. Although these horses are slow, with low speed and acceleration stats, they have a fearless personality that makes them perfect for any kind of combat.

These horses have a large sturdy body, too, making them perfect for going to battle. The Mustang is a horse that is good for a variety of tasks, whether it be racing, war, or work.

This versatile breed has great health and stamina, although their speed doesn't put them in a category as fast as a typical racing horse. Arthur can find Mustangs in the western portion of the Red Dead Redemption 2 map.

The Seal Brown, Sooty Buckskin and Chocolate Roan coats are available for purchase in stables. If Arthur needs a dependable work horse, the Dutch Warm blood is the breed he will want to get.

These war horses have excellent health and stamina, but they're not made for racing: their speed and acceleration stats are low. They come in two coats: Dark Bay and Rose Gray, both which are available for purchase at stables.

The Andalusian is one tough horse with an aggressive personality, meaning that they're not just good for war, but also for hunting. They have excellent health and stamina, but like other war horses, they tend to have low speed and acceleration.

They are among the heaviest of horse breeds in the game, but they handle well, especially under pressure, something that is important when going into battle. The Missouri Fox Trotter actually falls under two different categories of horse: race and work.

That's right, this breed is fast as well as sturdy, which makes it one of the best horses in Red Dead Redemption 2. It's a well-rounded breed with a great personality and could provide Arthur with the only horse he'll ever need in the game.

They are powerful horses, with great stamina, but they also have good speed and a lively trot that will help Arthur travel further, faster. The two coats are Amber Champagne and Silver Dapple Pinto, both of which are available for purchase at stables throughout the game map.

These horses have excellent health, stamina, and speed, meaning that they can handle long distances efficiently, as well as some work, such as pulling carriages. However, these horses do come with a warning: they can get impatient, so it's best not to make them wait in one spot for too long.

They have good health, stamina, speed and acceleration and are extremely intelligent. The Black and Rose Gray Bay coats are available at stables, but the absolute best, the rare White Arabian, is only available in the wild.
