I am just over 5'0” and most Jumping saddles I've ridden in have the blocks too far forward and the flaps too long. I've ridden mostly in old Stubbed's and Betrays when leasing horses.

The saddle seat size should reflect you leg (thigh) length so the correct saddle should have the blocks in the right place. If you find 17" saddles are too long in the thigh and flap then going down an inch or two should solve your problem.

Would it help if I chose a more/less forward cut saddle or does that not relate to the issue at all? If you search online a lot of people love them for how secure they but I always felt perched in mine.

The cut makes little difference as it should all be relatively proportional to the seat, but never say never If you search online a lot of people love them for how secure they but I always felt perched in mine.

Didn't fit the pony that well though and I sold it and got something with a flatter tree. Right about the length too, I can't fit in a 16/16.5 even though I'm very petite my legs are really long. I'd have to have a saddle fitter out to see if it will fit my mare, but she has a fairly flat back.

I often wonder if the issue could be because I tend to ride very short ... Different saddles... trying to figure out how to find one that fits me without having to have it custom-made... or does it already fit me and I'm just being fussy? The photo on the right is a bigger saddle but I feel more secure in it when jumping.

I'm wondering if it's just the design of the saddle, the size, or something else completely Different saddles... trying to figure out how to find one that fits me without having to have it custom-made... or does it already fit me and I'm just being fussy? I'm wondering if it's just the design of the saddle, the size, or something else completely I think a lot of it is to do with the design, my other horse has a stubbed and I love it, never felt so secure in a saddle.

I'm no jumper but I would expect your knee to sit reasonably into the knee roll, both of those pics look like you have a good couple of inches from your knee to the roll which I would have thought when jumping could cause you to shoot forward on touchdown if things aren't quite right (though I learned back in the days before knee rolls were even a thing). This image (google) shows how the thigh length effects the contact from the seat to the knee blocks, so a shorter seat would bring you closer to the knee roll.

Not my first choice by a mile, but it's a good compromise for horse and rider fit. The GP seems to fit me better for jumping for some reason... lets me have the adjustable blocks closer to me.

English jumping saddles are specifically made for hunter, jumper, and equitation. They feature forward flaps, and varying degrees of rotation designed to ease a rider’s leg position into the shorter stirrup length that’s required for jumping.

They often have padded knee tolls made for show jumping to help make a half-seat position or two-point more comfortable. The seat is generally flatter, and there are smaller knee and thigh blocks with a forward flap, enabling a more comfortable ride with the shorter stirrup required for jumping.

This saddle provides excellent comfort and grip in a durable leather-look for easy care. It’s a comfortable and stable balanced calfskin saddle with an easy-change fit solution.

The Air Cushion System is designed to maximize your horse’s freedom of movement and comfort. You and your horse will enjoy a comfortable fit with a fluid cushioning, optimal impact absorption, and even weight distribution with this saddle.

This Henri de Rivel Pro saddle is a favorite at a budget price point. The saddle features a slightly flat seat with a low pommel and narrow twist, providing a good platform for equitation.

The trees generally include a ten-year guarantee and are adjustable up to one-width larger or smaller by the factory or an authorized repair agent. Custom options for riders include Velcro or fixed blocks, longer flap lengths for taller riders, front and rear blocks in different sizes, personalizations like the choice of leather type and color, and others.

This saddle also has a number of handy customizations, including an easy-change gullet system to adjust to the horse’s width, an easy-change riser system to make saddle panel adjustment for optimal balance and clearance, and an ergonomic stirrup bar which removes a thickness of leather from under your thigh to ensure comfort and improve contact. The perfect mix of comfort and practicality, the Winter is a great affordable option.

This includes many of the features in their close-contact saddle, like front gussets, K-Panels for greater bearing surface and clearance, and serge panels made of wool to disperse heat and eliminate slipping. Whether schooling in flat-work, jumping, or simply riding the local trails, the beautiful Arena All-Purpose saddle has been carefully developed with you and your horse’s comfort in mind.

Available in classic brown, the Arena features quality workmanship with beautiful detail and European leather. Shorter riders need specific changes in saddle design and fit to accommodate their body types.

As obvious as it may seem, just shortening the flap will not create a better saddle fit for someone who is of smaller stature. A saddle with a narrower twist is usually the first step in ensuring fit for a shorter rider.

People often think it is in the crotch area, however, the twist is actually that part of the saddle that is felt between the rider’s upper, inner thighs. She does not necessarily need a small seat size, as seat size is determined by the circumference of the rider’s hips and upper leg, and the length of the horse’s back and belly are also taken into consideration.

You can have a very narrow twist on a saddle for a very wide horse and vice versa. So the tree width (measured at the gullet area of the pommel) is for the horse, while the twist is for the rider.

Seat size depends on the circumference of the rider’s hips and upper leg. Discussing seat size is a completely different topic, which also concerns the pommel (cut-back, quarter-cut-back, or not) as well as tree width.

This article was originally published in the October 2014 issue of Canadian Horse Journal. Designed to meet the needs of high-level showjumping, this saddle aims to achieve a perfect sensation over fences, as well as comfort and a very close contact with the horse.

The Plastique jumping saddle is a traditional flocked saddle with a unique tree and panel system. Manufactured in Wassail from English leather, this saddle has integrated knee rolls and thigh blocks for rider support, while the birthing system for the mono flap design allows the saddle to be fitted to a wide range of horses.

This saddle features a soft deep seat and an improved weight-bearing surface for the horse with a wider drop panel to provide extra support. This saddle is built on a wooden spring tree and features wool flocked independent panels (individually crafted by hand), which can be adapted and changed to suit each horse.

This fully handmade saddle features a tree made from different kinds of evaporated wood. The saddle features Velcro front and rear flex i-blocks allowing the rider to adopt a number of positions and accommodating a range of leg lengths.

This saddle has an open head and front gusset in the panel, being suitable for a horse with an average height wither. This saddle is suited to events and features a low narrow waist enabling the rider to sit into, rather than on the saddle and the forward cut flap allows for a variety of leg positions allowing the rider to ride shorter.

Below are trail riding saddles that are popular choices for short backed horses. Therefore, many riders feel a short backed horse (also called a short coupled” horse) benefits from a saddle that is shorter and/or has a round saddle skirt.

This saddle is a popular choice among trail riders, including those with short backed horses. We did our best to do accurate research but mistakes could have been made, or saddle information could have changed.

Look for trail riding saddles with round skirts in the table above. For example, a 16 hand horse with a short back can (most likely) comfortably wear a longer saddle than a 14 hand horse with a short back.
