The National Collegiate Equestrian Association (NCAA) provides opportunities for women to show at the highest level of competition during college. Note that because the colleges and universities below were selected for a wide range of reasons, any formal ranking doesn't make sense.

Equine theory classes in subjects such as equine science and course design as well as English and Western riding and draft horse driving are all taught out of the university's Bromeley-Daggett Equestrian Center, a 400-acre facility just a few minutes from campus. AU also fully supports its varsity hunt seat and Western equestrian teams, which compete in Zone 2, Region 1 of the Intercollegiate Horse Show Association (IHS).

Robert S. Donovan / Flickr The Auburn University School of Agriculture has a range of equine-related majors and minors, including Equine Science and Pre-Veterinary. The 80-acre facility's four arenas and several round pens enable several practices and classes to be held simultaneously.

Aimintang / Getty Images Baylor University has a Pre-Veterinary major for students interested in equine health. Baylor also hosts a competitive NCAA team, which rides at the Willis Family Equestrian Center located near campus.

The Berry College hunt seat and western equestrian teams compete successfully in IHS Zone 5, Region 2, regularly advancing to the national finals. The Centenary University Equestrian Center is a sizable facility featuring three barns, three riding arenas, and a hunt field.

CSU also offers opportunities for competition in several disciplines, with club teams in English riding, polo, ranch horse versatility, and rodeo. Located just west of the main campus, the center features an equine reproduction laboratory, two indoor arenas, classrooms and conference rooms, several barns and acres of pasture and trails.

Lake Erie College's School of Equine Studies offers a liberal-arts based program with majors in equestrian facility management, equestrian teacher/trainer and equine entrepreneurship with options for concentrations in therapeutic horsemanship and stud farm management. Wesley Hit / Getty Images Housed within the Ferguson College of Agriculture, OSU's equine curriculum is part of the university's animal science major, which students can customize to focus on production, business, pre-veterinarian, and ranch operations. Classes and practices are held at the Charles and Linda Cline Equine Teaching Facility, set on sixty acres in the town of Stillwater, Oklahoma.

The minor includes core courses in basic equine science as well as additional electives emphasizing topics such as management, genetics, and breeding. The program also maintains a herd of Quarter Horses at the university's equine facility that is used in classes and for breeding.

Penn State's IHS hunt seat equestrian team competes in Zone 3, Region 1 and trains off campus at a privately owned farm. SCAD also offers a highly competitive hunt seat equestrian team that competes in IHS Zone 5, Region 3 and has brought home several IHS and American National Riding Commission individual and team championships.

Skid more's Van Lenses Riding Center houses the education and competition programs. At St. Andrews University, equestrian students can pursue a bachelor of arts and bachelor of science degrees in equine business management, equine science, pre-veterinary, therapeutic horsemanship, and therapeutic horsemanship business management.

Charles Hogmanay/Getty Images The equestrian program at Sweet Brian College consists of several levels of education in hunter/jumper/equitation, training and schooling young horses, and hunter-oriented cross-country. Students have the option to pursue an Equine Studies Certificate with a concentration in teaching and schooling or management in addition to their major.

Sweet Brian's Harriet Howell Rogers Riding Center is located on campus and features one of the largest indoor college arenas in the country. Texas A&M’s Department of Animal Sciences provides undergraduate and graduate programs that emphasize hands-on learning experience and encourage participation in extracurriculars such as collegiate judging teams, internships, the Horseman’s Association, and undergraduate research.

Their eleven-time national champion NCAA team operates out of the Hildebrand Equine Complex, located near campus. Texas Christian University offers a Ranch Management Program, which focuses on improving and preserving land resources.

University of Findlay's equestrian studies program offers associate's degrees in both English and Western riding and training as well as a bachelor of science programs in equine business management and English or Western equestrian studies. David Trivia / Flickr The University of Georgia offers twenty-two majors and eighteen minors that fall under the category of Agriculture as well as several related graduate programs.

The program also offers a horse racing club and competitive opportunities in saddle seat, IDA dressage, evening, polo, and IHS hunt seat and Western teams competing in Zone 6, Region 3. The university's Riding and Racing Club also encompasses IHS hunt seat and Western teams competing in Zone 6, Region 3 and an Intercollegiate Saddle Seat Riding Association (ISARA) team based out of the nearby Broad Stables.

Students wishing to compete can participate in the rodeo club or the university's hunt seat and Western equestrian teams, which show in IHS Zone 8, Region 3.

The equine studies program is based out of the university's Montana Center for Horsemanship, a natural horsemanship-based facility located less than two miles from campus. The University of South Carolina NCAA team operates out of the nearby One wood Farm riding facility with state-of-the-art amenities for horses and riders, located approximately twenty minutes away from campus.

Horse and Livestock shows are held in the Ned McWhirter Agricultural Complex, which also hosts their NCAA team. Equestrian students can compete in intercollegiate horse judging, rodeo, and IHS hunt seat and Western teams showing in Zone 7, Region 2.

The 185-acre facility includes five buildings, 64 stalls, multiple tack rooms and wash stalls, an outdoor arena, two round pens for lunging or light training work, 180 acres of pasture, and miles of mountain trails to enjoy a hack.

Its 240-acre Equine Education Center has a large indoor arena, multiple outdoor rings, and a number of turn-out paddocks. Students have access to top-of-the-line jumps and other equipment, while lessons that don't take place on horseback occur in network wired classrooms with views of the arena.

The facility boasts three large arenas, including the impressive Used Building, a show-ready indoor arena complete with a heating system, elevated judge's booth, attached classrooms, a concession stand, and a public address system. The program is at The Suzanne Corner Equestrian Center, where riders can enjoy two arenas (an indoor and an outdoor) and miles of back campus trails.

Students can sign up for lessons, board their own horses, or compete on Earl ham's competitive equestrian team. USA Equestrian regulation jumps can be found in the arena, while a full cross-country course is also set up on the property.

As its name suggests, Meredith Manor International Equestrian College is the only school in the world dedicated entirely to equine-themed studies. Tucked into a gorgeous valley, the campus includes nine barns, a farrier and equine massage therapy shop, feed sheds, classrooms, laboratories, and a whopping seven indoor riding arenas.

Michigan State University Location The Horse Teaching and Research Center at Michigan State University offers its students far more than the usual riding lessons and a spot on a competitive equestrian team. For those more interested in riding horses than breeding them, the 100-acre Center boasts a show/training barn, a large indoor arena, classrooms, and plenty of pastures for turnout.

The research program maintains mares, stallions, and foals, and therefore even has a breeding shed and laboratory for semen collection and artificial insemination. The Center consists of two indoor riding arenas, an outdoor arena, four barns with a total of 70 stalls, indoor and outdoor wash racks, a whopping 10 round pens, and a multitude of trails riding opportunities throughout adjacent public lands.

And while most college equestrian centers have waiting lists or limited spots for personal horses, Rocky students who wish to bring their own horses to college with them can board them in a specially designated boarding area specifically for that purpose. Stanford, aptly nicknamed “The Farm,” is home to one of the West Coast's most dominant equestrian teams, as well as a number of top-notch trainers.

Thus, the facility is state-of-the-art, and includes such features as nearly 100 stalls in the freshly restored Red Barn (the horses in which all receive a daily turnout), two covered lighted arenas with the best available footing, an oversized dressage arena, two lunging areas, and an Durocher. When student riders aren't on horseback, locker rooms, showers, a clubhouse, and a picnic area all cater to their enjoyment.

The incredible 120' x 300' Robin S. Crater Hall is one of the largest indoor college arenas in the nation, and comes complete with a heated viewing area and a sound system. On the rare occasion the arena is too busy, students also have access to three outdoor rings, a covered lunging area, several schooling fields that include natural obstacles, and a large collection of Pre-approved hunter/jumper fences.

When an easy hack is needed, students and horses alike are sure to enjoy the more than 18 miles of serene trails. Conveniently located four miles from the main campus, the 32-acre facility offers students access to two indoor arenas, an outdoor arena, a grass jumping field, large classrooms, individual tack lockers, and enough stalls and paddocks for 130 horses.

For example, The Nutrition Barn's 12 large pens are specifically designed to study the effects of dietary changes on growing horses, exercising horses, and broodmares, while a laboratory facility handles everything from in vitro incubators to equipment necessary for studying atomic absorption spectrophotometry. Its Equine Education Center sits on more than 26 acres, and includes a state-of-the-art indoor arena, a 2400-square foot barn, and a classroom complex that can host 100 students at a time.

As NCAA student-athletes, Heath man points out, “Equestrian team members will have other varsity program responsibilities, such as study tables, volunteer and fundraising hours, and required workout times.” Used events are Olympic-style, three-day equestrian triathlons where riders use their own horses as they complete the dressage, cross-country, and show jumping phases.

While this has traditionally been an individual sport, Used added intercollegiate evening and a team championship for its over 30 member schools. Club teams are typically student (and student-run) organizations open to riders with varying levels of experience or those with a desire to learn to ride.

There are opportunities to compete at the club level, typically through the Intercollegiate Horse Shows Association (OSHA), which has over 400 member schools. Founded in 1830, Randolph-Macon College prides itself on offering a well-rounded and robust education, built upon undergraduate research, study abroad programs, and internship opportunities.
